Birthday of Guru Gobind Singh |
Day that commemorates the birth of the tenth Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, in AD 1666. He was responsible for instituting the Five Ks and established the Order of the Khalsa on Vaisakhi (Baisakhi). The day is marked by an akhand path, which is an unbroken reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, normally lasting 48 hours. |

Basant |
Basant is a spring festival celebrated in the Indian subcontinent by people of all religions and marks the arrival of Spring. For Namdhari Sikhs, however, it has added significance, who celebrate Basant to mark the birth of their founder, Baba (Satguru) Ram Singh. He stressed meditation and prayer, and encouraged Sikh non-cooperation with the colonial rule through non-violent means. |

This festival was introduced in India in 1680 by Guru Gobind Singh, the tenth Guru, as an alternative to the Hindu festival of Holi — it occurs one day after Holi. Traditionally, the festival includes competitive displays of swordsmanship, horsemanship, archery and wrestling, as well as displays of weaponry and symposia of poetry. |

Sikh New Year festival. This day marks the date in 1699 when the Order of the Khalsa was founded by Guru Gobind Singh. On this day the Five Ks (the five outward symbols of Sikhism) were made obligatory and Sikh men took the name Singh and women Kaur. The initiation ceremony known as amrit was also introduced. |

Martyrdom of Guru Arjan |
Festival commemorating the death of the fifth Guru, who was executed, at the behest of the Moghal Emperor, for refusing to pay a fine arising from a charge of treason. It was Guru Arjan that made the first compilation of the Adi Granth (the Sikh scriptures) and supervised the completion of the Golden Temple at Amritsar. A gurpurb (holy day commemorating an event in the life of a Guru) is held on this day with an akhand path — an unbroken reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, normally lasting 48 hours. |

Day that commemorates the installation of Sikh scriptures in the Harimandir Sahib (commonly called the Golden Temple) at Amritsar in 1604. |

Divali (Bandi Chhor Divas) |
Divali is celebrated by Sikhs as the day when the sixth Guru, Guru Hargobind, was released from Gwalior prison. He refused to accept the release unless Emperor Jehangir also released 52 imprisoned Hindu princes at the same time. To mark the festival, the Golden Temple at Amritsar is illuminated and firework displays take place there. It is also a time for new clothes, presents and sweets. |

Birthday of Guru Nanak |
Guru Nanak Sahib, founder of Sikhism, was born on 20th October, 1469 in present-day Pakistan. An akhand path — an unbroken reading of the Guru Granth Sahib — is begun about two days before the day of the celebration, so that the reading finishes on the morning of the festival. Sikhs gather at the gurdwara (Sikh temple) to hear sermons and sing hymns about the life of the first Guru. The congregation will share a free meal (langar). The gurdwaras are usually illuminated and there are firework displays. |

Day commemorating the public execution of the ninth Guru. The Moghul emperor ordered his execution for upholding an individual's right to worship in the manner of his or her choice. |
