Creating Inclusive Learning Environments
Are your children learning in an inclusive environment?
Evaluating practice in your workplace should be done on a regular basis.
Remember to also check where your own children spend their time when they're not with you, whether it's at school, nursery or with
a childminder.
- Do pictures, posters, puzzles and games feature black as well as white families?
- Do illustrations and text in books portray non-stereotypical characters and situations? Do they offer the opportunity for children to identify positive black characters in leading roles?
- Do children listen to or make music from a wide range of cultural backgrounds?
- Do children hear stories from different lands and different languages?
- Do children have the opportunity to eat foods from many cultures?
- Do adults actively intervene if children are called names, laughed at or excluded because of the colour of their skin or the way they speak or dress?
- Are paint colours available to cater for all skin colours realistically?
- Is brown play dough, crepe/tissue paper (brown and black) available for children at all times, not just brought out for Halloween or when making animal crafts?
