Responding to Racist Incidents
The following steps should be taken whenever there is a racist incident. (Taken from Celebrating Identity (1996) Chambers, Funge,
Harris & Williams - available to borrow from STAR)
- Be clear that you do not accept or collude with the racist statement
- Make the recipient of the racism feel that they are valued and that the incident is being taken seriously
- Create an environment where the recipient feels comfortable and able to talk to you
- Do not 'ignore' the fact that they have a different skin colour - they have
- Help the child to feel positive about having a different skin colour, hair, etc., use positive words that make them feel good
- Listen carefully to the child's comments, questions, frustrations
- Do not deflect their concerns, give truthful explanations
- Acknowledge the child's feelings of sadness, confusion, anger, hurt, etc.
- Point out that people are visibly different in many ways, such as their different eye or hair colour, and that all people should be equally valued
- Describe examples of what happened to you in the past when you were made to feel different, and say how you felt
- If you are in the company of a child or young person who was being racist, ask them why they said what they did
- Make sure the perpetrator of the racism is also counselled and not simply made to feel rejected
- Make sure that the parents/carers are aware of the incident and how it is being dealt with
- Take up the issue with the teacher, make sure you ask for help and support from others who are working with the children concerned
