Kirikou and the Sorceress
Michel Ocelot

Based on a traditional West African folk tale, this film tells the story of the 10cm tall Kirikou, a small boy who delivers himself from his mother's womb to emerge walking and talking. Kirikou undertakes a perilous journey in order to discover the secret of the evil sorceress, who has cursed his village, eating up the menfolk and drying up the spring.

Director Michel Ocelot's rich animation plunges his audience deep into the African bush, a place of myth and spirituality, and the specially commissioned score by Senegalese musician Youssou N'Dour uses only traditional African instruments to maintain an authentic feel throughout.

A World of Difference
Leeds Animation Workshop

Alien abduction saves Natalie from the menace of school bullies and takes her off to the planet Helicon. Here she is asked to solve the problem of the failing Purple students within the school. The school is a place in which racial harassment, bullying and cultural denial are as much part of the school timetable as history and art.

A World of Difference is an entertaining and thought-provoking animation. It uses the science fiction genre as a means of preventing the stereotyping of either the victims or perpetrators of racial harassment.
